Unfortunately I’ve had to come home sick, so I’m really sorry to miss you.

There’s loads of useful stuff on the web, too. I hope you’re having a really good trawl around the excellent British Library Texts in Context’ materials and their superb new timelines.

There are some very useful articles on standardisation (a topic I’d like to have covered in greater depth) here.

And if you want a bang-up-to-date example of the prescriptivist / descriptivist debate in action, there’s this from this morning’s Today programme on Radio4.
